Updated: Sep 29

The Magicians Syfy TV show Season 1 poster with Alice, Quentin, Julia, Eliot, Margo, and Penny doing magic

Britt and Chris are excited for their podcast on The Magicians TV show by SyFy! Each podcast episode will cover one episode of the show, exploring character POVs, themes, societal settings, and all kinds of magic moments. ✨

Below are all Season 1 episodes and here you can find S2, S3, S4, and S5.

They will ocassionally bring in elements from Lev Grossman's book trilogy, but you don't need to have read the novels to listen along!

Listen to Season 1:

Britt and Chris begin their new watch along of The Magicians TV show, beginning with the s1e1 pilot, "Unauthorized Magic." They discuss Quentin as a unique protagonist, Eliot's remorable first pose, and the show's striking introduction to the Beast. They also explore the POVs of Julia and Penny and the ideas of garden paths and quarter life crises.

Britt and Chris discuss what happens in "The Source of Magic," including Julia's inquisitive mind, academic institutions' response to on-campus tragedies, and Penny and Quentin's amusing animosity. They also think about the idea of magic coming from pain instead of talent, and the POVs of Eliot and Margo.

For "Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting," Britt and Chris discuss Brakebills disciplines, Quentin and Julia's confrontation at the safehouse, and a vast new primary source database of the dead. They also explore the POVs of Penny and Quentin, as well as the hilarious moment when Quentin hides behind a tree.

Episode 4 of The Magicians podcast covers "The World in the Walls." Britt and Chris touch on psychiatric hospital representation in pop culture, Quentin's subconscious thoughts, the dangers of magic, and the similarities between Julia and the Madness Maker. They also go deeper into the POVs of Quentin, Penny, and Marina.

For "Mendings, Major and Minor," Britt and Chris discuss cancer puppy, welters shenanigans, and magical mentors. They also explore how magic can't solve all problems, and think about the POVs of Alice and --- oddly enough -- Pete.

Britt and Chris discuss "Impractical Applications," laughing over fabulous quotes (including "Is someone being creepy on purpose?"), Eliot's histrionics, and The Trials. They also explore orientalism, the power of secrets, and the POVs of Penny and Kady.

Britt and Chris cover "The Mayakovsky Circumstance," discussing Brakebills South, insect mind control, djinn, Julia's family history, and of course the cruelly hilarious Mayakovsky. They also explore the POVs of Qunetin and Kady.

Episode 8 of The Magicians podcast explores "The Strangled Heart" episode. Britt and Chris discuss Quentin being a stalker, Richard's new theory of magic, emotional vulnerability, and Penny and Quentin's changing relationship. They also think about POVs of a very sad Eliot and a very uncomfortable Alice.

Martin Chatwin and Jane Chatwin as kids in the Plover Mansion

This episode on "The Writing Room" is extra long for obvious reasons. Britt and Chris delight in the joys of Julia returning to herself, ghostbuster historians, and Penny retelling Jane's unpublished Fillory Book 6. They also explore the heavier topics of child abuse, medical assistance in dying, and when the creators of your favorite series are monstrous.

In discussing "Homecoming," Britt and Chris explore Alice and Quentin's relationship problems, Penny's resourcefulness, and the show's introduction to the Neitherlands and the Library. They also think about Richard's Free Trader group and the POVs of Margo(lem) and Alice's mom, Stephanie.

Discussing "Remedial Battle Magic," Britt and Chris cover everything from bottling emotions, to summoning gods, to Penny looking damn handsome for someone who just had a heart attack. They also explore the POVs of #UnluckyPenny and struggling besties Eliot and Margo as everyone prepares to fight the Beast.

It's time loop time! 🔁 For "Thirty-Nine Graves," Britt and Chris discuss the time loop revelation, faith in Our Lady Underground, the threesome aftermath, and amusing things Margo prepared for battle. They also wonder why Penny ships are so compelling before exploring the POVs of Julia and Margo.

For The Magicians Season 1 Finale, Britt and Chris discuss the quirks of Fillory and delights of Ember. 🐏 They also explore Marina's support of Julia and Martin Chatwin's return to the Writing Room. They then wrap up the episode with the POVs of unchosen Quentin and very chosen Eliot.

In The Magicians S1 Wrap-Up, Britt and Chris share their favorite moments of magic use in the show so far (basically travel 🌍 and cocktails🍹). They also explore new character revelations and how The Magicians dismantles the idea of a Chosen One and puts emphasis on individual choices.
