Loneliness in The Lord of the Rings

In this week's episode, we analyze LOTR (and a little bit of The Hobbit) through the theme of Loneliness. We look at several characters, including Treebeard, Gollum, Gandalf, Éowyn, and Aragorn. We also consider how the ring diminishes or extenuates loneliness, how certain hobbits help break through its hold, and how Sauron would have been more interesting if he was lonely without his best bud blood ring.

We start the episode off with a heartbreaking quote by Gollum to his Sméagol self in The Two Towers movie:

We picked this quote because we think negative self-talk can often make us feel even more alone and isolated, just like it did for Gollum.

Where else do you see big or small acts of loneliness in LOTR? We would love to hear your thoughts!

...and until next week - GEEK OUT!
