Discussing Violence in the Harry Potter Books

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

In this week's Harry Potter podcast episode, we have a fascinating discussion on the theme of violence in the seven HP books. We pay special attention to Draco Malfoy's journey from inflicting to receiving to stopping violence. We also analyze everything from expelliarmus, to teaching/classes at Hogwarts, to the Unforgiveable Curses.

Listen to the episode here and see some of the fanart we mention in the episode below:

Now, on to some of the amazing Harry Potter fanart we mentioned in this episode!

The phenomenal artist atalienart (on tumblr) / natello (on deviantart) did a gorgeously chilling series that deal with different violent spells and conditions in the Harry Potter books. Since the artist asks that people not repost their art, here is a tiiiny pic of their Sectumspempra piece so you can see how amazing it looks and want to click through to all the pieces they created on their actual website.

Click here for their Remus and lycanthropy piece.

Click here for their Riddle's diary piece.

Click here for their RAB and infiri piece.

That fanart is so incredible, right? (Why don't I have that kind of drawing ability??? T.T)

In the episode, we also mention it being clear in the Harry Potter movies that Draco Malfoy was physically abused by Lucius growing up. Click here to see those blink-and-you-almost-miss-it moments from the films.

Well, that's going to wrap up this week. But, before you go, we'd love to know what ideas of violence (or pacifism!) in HP really speak to you. Let us know in the comments or here.

...and until next week - GEEK OUT!
